ABOUT US

I opened The Art School of nepa 14 years ago with the hope of giving children the encouragement and attention they needed in order to excel in art.  I started with 10 students in a one-room studio.  Three years later, my enrollment of 20 students tripled to 60 students.  I then decided to leave my other teaching positions to run the studio full-time.  I also needed to hire more teachers.  I was truly lucky to find Rachel, Suzanne , Christina and Lauren.  These talented people share a love of art and a dedication to teaching.  We currently teach between 70 to 90 students each year.  Children may begin taking classes at age five.  In response to requests from students and parents, we added classes for teenagers and adults.  We now offer college prep courses and portfolio preparation for college admission.  Days and times for all of these classes are included on our website.  Portfolio prep is done on an individual basis and usually takes from three to six months to complete.

Each month we offer craft parties for children.  Parties usually have a holiday theme, and our craft is connected to the holiday.  Parties include crafts, cake and bingo prizes!  Dates and times are included in our newsletter.  Children do not have to be students of the school in order to come to the parties.  Parents usually find this is a nice treat for a sibling who does not attend classes on a regular basis.  If you wish to be included on our call list, we will call you to remind you of upcoming parties.

We are open year round.  We offer special workshops in drawing, pastel and oil painting in the summer, in addition to our intro to art classes for beginning students.  I insist on limiting class size to ten students.  This allows me to get to know each student and to work with each one in a way many teachers cannot.  I have always strived to make the school a friendly environment where the students are encouraged to test their talent and challenge their imagination.  It is important for students to learn the techniques of drawing, painting, sculpture, etc.  But it is more important that they have found a way to express their unique view of the world.  My students are at all different ages and skill levels.  Their love of art and their courage to try new techniques unite them.  I am honored to be their teacher.

Sincerely,

Colleen Munley
